I generally think of myself as a crafty person. However, I do think I kind of missed the DIY and refurbishing bandwagon. So I am running along behind, and catching up quickly! Starting with some dining room chairs!
My need for dining room chairs came after purchase of this table. A classic 50's table, I fell in love with it when I found it at the Methodist Children's Home sale at the end of last month. For being so old, it is in great condition with almost no rust and the laminate is in good condition!
I had considered some acrylic chairs as well as some other chrome, but I hadn't found anything perfect yet. Then! On Thursday my Mom found these at a local thrift store, and this weekend, I took these chairs, circa 1965, and refurbished them.
I really did not know what to expect, so mom and I started at Home Depot in the spray paint aisle. I must say 10 points to Krylon! They have tons of colors! I was so impressed. The last time I spray painted something, the color selection was basic and minimal. Also, 10 more points for giving their customers a little information about colors and why they work together.
Thankfully, the chairs completely came apart so I could easily make everything very neat. I chose to paint the frames brilliant silver, and then two of the grid backs Tomato Red and two of them a blue color that I would say is a mix between Tiffany Blue and Martha Stewart Blue.
Mom and I then took a four hour trip to Joann's and came back with some fabric, things to make milkshakes with this summer, and my very own sewing machine. I am pumped! I have wanted one forever, and this seemed like a good time if any to get one.
I opted for this floral and super saturated piping to make the new seat cushions with.
We finished that today, and I spent about two hours neatly stapling the new covers and foam onto the seats. Thank goodness they were easy to put back together!
The finished product!
I keep showing three chairs! There are four, the other one just needed another coat of paint today, and it would not fit in my car...
Dining set complete! For my first refurbishing project I am very pleased with the results! Time to get sewing!
