By the time I had woken up, had a stretch and my obligatory bowl of cereal and soymilk, and switched on the TV, Epic was halfway up the ground floor. I only knew this because the channel seven morning show had set up shop outside the store, and that was what I was watching while chowing down on muesli.
Massive eep and very surreal as I was watching my workplace go under, seven km's up the road while I was high and dry and the sun was beaming in for the first time in what seemed like years!
This pic made into the SMH online, featuring Epic and the devastating flood. |
Ended up going and helping out, like many of the neighbours in Rosalie and Paddington. We managed to completely evacuate the store, and move about a million (hey, maybe even more...) bikes to higher ground, as nearby residets offered up their garages and storage spaces.
A HUGE thanks to these people. There's nothing like a natural disaster to bring people together, it seems. I have never experienced such open generosity in my life before.
The picture above was taken well before the floods peak, which took the waters up the the silver awning. My understanding has it that MB Cycles, Milton and NRG Cycles in Jindalee are also underwater, and no doubt several stores in the city and New Farm are also under.
The cleanup will be beyond comprehension for the residents of Rockhampton and west, all the way dow to Brissie and into the northern river areas of the NSW coast (such as Grafton).
How do you clean a bike shop that has been filled with effluence? One shovel full at a time...
