A Prescription for Pretty: Sugarpill Cosmetics

I've been looking forward to reviewing Sugarpill Cosmetics for a while now! The line debuted back in early February, but I had to wait to save up some funds before placing my order. Needless to say, the quality of this product show how much hard work and creativity Sugarpill founder Amy put into developing this line! Amy was already well known for her clothing line she developed under the moniker Shrinkle, but she decided to expand into the world of cosmetics to create a line that rivals department store and indie brands alike for quality, originality, and price. So without further ado, time to get to see the wonderful world of Sugarpill Cosmetics!

Everything I received: Receipt with hand-written note from Amy, Sugarpill and Shrinkle business cards, ChromaLust Loose Pigment in Goldilux, sparkly Sugarpill sticker, Sugarpill Sweetheart palette, Sugarpill Sweetheart palette box & lots and lots of pretty pink tissue paper.
Just from opening the box I could already tell that I was going to enjoy my Sugarpill Cosmetics! The amount of detail and little extras Amy decided to include is not only very generous, but also shows the amount of thoughtfulness she took to bring this all together. The packaging, sticker, business cards, and tissue paper all match beautifully! I haven't encountered any other company that takes the time to do something like this.

Packaging for the Sweetheart palette and the ChromaLust loose pigment eyeshadow.
The packaging is gorgeous and represents the brand perfectly: feminine, fun, bright, and edgy. I'm not normally one to keep packaging from cosmetics, but these boxes are too pretty to throw away! Not only is the packaging in fun colors, it also has a lot of added appeal in that there a lot of different "textures" going on from pearls, paint splatters, lace and damask print. I love that the ChromaLust box has a heart cut-out, it's a very nice touch. More importantly, while I didn't take a picture of this, the packaging has the full ingredient list on the back so there are no surprises. This is something I wish more indie brands would include in their packaging.

The palette itself is made from heavy-duty cardboard and is held shut by a magnet. The logo is printed on and "Sugarpill" is printed in silver glitter. The ChromaLust jar's top is heat-stamped with the logo. I like the consistency in how the products' packaging was designed and that the different components of the collection have a unified theme and look. Earlier reviewers suggested that Amy also have the names of the eyeshadows placed on the back of the palette and the back of my palette shows the re-design to include that information. Also, could the Sugarpill kitty mascot be any more cute?

The Sweetheart Palette from the Addicted to Pretty Collection
(smudges in Afterparty & Midori are from swatching, not manufacturing!)
Originally I had planned just to order a single pressed eyeshadow (Midori), but because the price of the palette allowed me to get four shadows at $8.50 a piece rather than the normal $12.00 per shadow I thought it was worth the investment. As swatched above, you can see that this palette features a shimmery leaf green, beautiful matte gumball pink, a true matte white, and a pearlescent pool colored blue. Comparing my photo to the image on Sugarpill's website I'm happy to say that the product pictures are highly accurate of the actual product. Definitely no photoshopping occurred to make these colors look any brighter!

Sweetheart palette swatched dry in daylight with no base, single stroke application
More impressively yet is that the eyeshadows apply to look as bright as they do in the pan. A base (Urban Decay's Primer Potion etc.) would obviously make these shades pop a lot more, but simply on their own they already are pretty outstanding in terms of pigmentation! The texture of these eyeshadows is smooth and hasn't been compromised because of the high levels of pigmentation. It's a very good formula and comparable, if not superior to, a lot of department store and high end cosmetics brands. I'm by no means a make-up expert, but compared to what brands I am familiar with the quality of these shadows is outstanding especially considering the price of these shadows is significantly lower than other high end brands that don't even perform as well!

Sugarpill pan size versus MAC pan size and Stila pan size
As stated above, one of the best things about the Sugarpill line is that it is rather cost effective. The pan size is generous and the quality of the eyeshadow is comparable to brands like Make Up Forever which are more expensive (A single MUFE pressed shadow is $19.00 where as a single Sugarpill shadow costs $12.00 or $8.50 per shadow in a palette) and do not contain as much product. It's not too often you can stumble upon a product that is simultaneously of the best quality compared to its peers while still being relatively affordable.

Goldilux ChromaLust loose eyeshadow indoors and in natural light
It's hard to find a true gold eyeshadow, but Sugarpill's Goldilux is hands-down the best gold eyeshadow I've seen. I was a bit apprehensive at first to try loose eyeshadow since I've never used it before, but also because there have been some major issues of some companies repackaging loose pigments. Within the last year some companies were repackaging basic components of mineral eyeshadows and reselling them at a markup for profit while insisting they were unique products. I can confidently say that Sugarpill Cosmetics absolutely does not repackage pigments and that each loose eyeshadow is a unique formulation to the brand.

Goldilux swatched dry and wet in natural light
Loose pigments apply better with a base or wet, but Goldilux is still quite pretty by itself. However, when wet, it turns into gorgeous King Tutankhamen liquid gold. If you wanted to try Sugarpill Cosmetics, I think this would definitely be the product to start with. The loose eyeshadows are also $12.00 like their pressed counterparts and each jar contains 5 grams of product. The only complaint I have about the loose eyeshadows is they can be a bit prone to spilling and personally I would like it if the jar had a sifter. Once again, this is a generous portion for the price considering the quality of the product! I'm looking forward to experimenting with this pigment and finding a perfect metallic eye look. I definitely think Sugarpill has been able to develop a great metallic pigment and would love to see other metallic shades like bronze, copper, and my personal favorite rose gold in the future. This color is also a lot more approachable than most in the pressed eyeshadow collection for those who are more comfortable with neutral colors.

Overall, I'm very impressed by what Sugarpill Cosmetics has to offer. All the details, from the ease of ordering to the details on the packaging, have been thoughtfully designed and crafted. I'm really excited to see how this brand continues to develop and produce high quality and interesting products. Nothing about this brand is lacking, from the commitment to customer service to the quality of the product. Three cheers for Sugarpill Cosmetics!
