On this day in 1794, the Royal Navy fought the French some distance off the island of Ushant. This was the first major naval battle between the two powers since war had been declared the previous year. Admiral Lord Howe led the British fleet in its fight against Vice-Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse. Even though France claims victory, England inflicted more damage -sinking 7 French ships. So it's huzzah for Lord Howe, John Bull, and England's hearts of oak!
